Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as qualifying income?
Your total income from self-employment and property before any expenses: your sales or turnover plus the rent you receive (just your share if a property is jointly owned). Wages, pensions, dividends, savings interest and partnership profits don’t count.
What if I run a limited company?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax doesn’t apply to limited companies, and HMRC has said it does not intend to introduce MTD for Corporation Tax. If your company is VAT registered, it must already use MTD for VAT. If you personally have rental or self-employed income too, that could bring you into MTD for Income Tax.
Do spreadsheets count?
Not on their own. You can keep using spreadsheets, but you’ll need HMRC-recognised bridging software that links them to HMRC to send your quarterly updates and tax return. Paper records won’t meet the rules.
What if I’m not sure of my figures?
Choose “I’m not sure” in the checker. Your most recent tax return is the best place to find them, and Timothy can go through them with you on a free 30-minute call.
